ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION – Libyan Coast Guard threatens NGO Seawatch aircraft – 26.10.2022

On Wednesday 26th October, 2022 the Libyan coastguard vessel 658 FEZZAN threatened to shoot down an aircraft belonging to an NGO in international waters and Malta has no jurisdiction on the area where the incident happened.

On Thursday, Sea-Watch shared footage showing the Libyan Coast Guard radio officer saying “get away from Libyan territory otherwise we will shoot you [with] some missiles.” Accusing the Libyan coast guard of threatening its crew with force of arms in the Maltese search and rescue zone, Sea-Watch captioned the video with “the EU’s partner’s at work in violation of international law.” According to Sea-Watch, their airplane Seabird caught sight of an overcrowded inflatable boat with 70 people in distress. Shortly after, the Libyan Coast Guard patrol craft began to threaten the Seabird aircrew.

658 FEZZAN arrived at Tripoli at Abu Sitta Naval Base with 14 personnel onboard after a delivery voyage in October 2018 from Italy and was originally a Guardia Di Finanza Corrubia Class of 26.2 metres long.
