Sakarya gas field, which is operated by Turkish Petroleum, is claimed to be the largest discovery in the Black Sea. It is located within the 7,000km² block AR/TPO/KD/C26-C27-D26-D27 in the ultra-deep waters in the western Black Sea, approximately 175km offshore Eregli, Turkey.
In November 2021 it was announced that the Italian oilfield services company Saipem has undertaken the laying of a submarine pipeline that will transport the gas from the Sakarya Gas Field in the Black Sea to land.
The laying of most of the pipes that will enable gas to reach the Filyos Natural Gas Processing Facility from the Sakarya Gas Field, which is approximately 170 kilometers offshore, will be laid by the vessel CASTORONE. She will lay pipes to the deepsea, after the operation of the 1976 built 134metres barge CASTORO 10 in shallow parts.

SAIPEM’s flagship is a self-propelled, dynamically positioned pipe-laying vessel operating in S-lay mode with a 120-metre long S-lay stern stinger composed of 3 articulated and adjustable sections for shallow and deep-water operation, a holding capacity of up to 1,000 tonnes, pipelay capability of up to 60 inches, onboard fabrication facilities for triple and double joints and large pipe storage capacity in cargo holds.
