On Wednesday 6th April, 2022 around 1230 UTC the 2010 built container ship CMA CGM RABELAIS while underway from Singapore to India, suffered an explosion, followed by fire, in western Malacca Strait between Andaman islands and Banda Aceh Sumatra.

The Master immediately ordered a firefighting operation and the fire was soon controlled and remains so. A crew member slipped and fell during this operation, suffering fractured ribs. No pollution was reported and the vessel has requested a firefighting tug to assist of which the 2008 built 66 metre offshore tug/supply ship PACIFIC VALKYRIE is next to the boxship.

CMA CGM RABELAIS was built in South Korea as Yard No 4004 by Sungdong Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co Ltd at Tongyeong with a container capacity of 6,540 TEUs.
As off today Friday 8th April she was dead adrift in Malacca Strait around 23nm off Malaysia and 65 nm off Port Klang.
