Breaking Up – 1995 built container ship BUNGA PELANGI DUA – 2012

On Monday 16th July, 2012 the 1995 South Korean built container ship BUNGA PELANGI DUA was broken up at Alang, India.

She was built at Hyundai Heavy Industries Co Ltd (HHI) at Seoul in South Korea as Yard No 919. She was 275.1m long with 37.19 m beam. Homeported at Port Kelang, Malaysia (MYS Flag) with radio callsign as 9MBX5.

She had a carrying capacity of 4,469 TEU, Lloyd’s Register of Shipping as Classification society and was owned by MISC (BHD) Malaysia.

On Monday 17th November, 1997 she collided with the bulk carrier IOLCOS ABILITY at the Suez with port side damaged especially in no 5 oil tank which was holed. On Sunday 23rd November she entered the canal after sea trials and arrived at Damietta, the same day. On Tuesday 2nd December she entered Marsaxlokk Harbour, Malta to discharge all containers before shifting to Malta Drydocks on Sunday 7th December.

Another successful repair by Malta Drydocks was done and she left Grand Harbour, Malta on Saturday 10th January, 1998.

In 2003 she was in headlines again, this time on Tuesday 18th February when she rescued 7 crew members from the Danish cargo ship KARIN CAT (cargo shifted and had to be abandoned) which sank in the Mediterranean Sea off the Greek Coast.
