Dredging – Jan De Nul Group with New Suez Canal Dredging Works – April, 2021.

The Suez Canal is the shortest shipping route between Europe and Asia. To enlarge the transit capacity and to increase industrial activity in the area, a new Suez Canal had to be constructed next to the existing one.

The project was a challenge because of its size but above all because of the very tight deadline. To complete such a project in less than twelve months is unprecedented. The New Canal has a depth of 24m, a width of 240m, and is one third in length of the current Canal.

For this project, Jan De Nul Group mobilised seven cutter suction dredgers – the 2003 built J.F.J. DE NUL, 2007 built HONDIUS and KAERIUS, 2011 built FERNAO DE MAGALHAES, 2010 built IBN BATTUTA, 1985 built LEONARDO DA VINCI and the 2010 built ZHENG HE.

All images are of the cutter suction dredger LEONARDO DA VINCI entering Grand Harbour, Malta back to 7th August, 2012.
