A seafarer died and another 15 were hospitalised last night after a fire broke out on the Maltese (MLT) flag LPG carrier SYN ZANIA which was moored at a port in Turkey.
The fire started around 2300hrs last night while the ship was offloading a cargo at a SOCAR facility in the port of Aliaga. The fire was put out around 0200 hrs this morning and cooling operations are continuing. An investigation into the accident is set to be launched today.
The 2008 Italian built and owned gas carrier by Naples based Synergas, was badly damaged in the fire.
