Spotted Vessel – MARCO POLO at Marseille, France – 13.04.2019

The floating dock or Caissonier MARCO POLO was spotted at Marseille Harbour in France on Saturday 13th April, 2019. She arrived from Poland from the builders on Sunday 27th August 2017 as a deck cargo aboard the semi submersible heavy lift vessel SUN RISE.

She’s 56 metres long with 50 metres wide and 27 metres high and was built by the Gdynia located Crist Shipyard.

The first French structure of this type, the huge metal structure is now installed at station 123 for about 20 months in order to accomplish its task: to carry out 18 caissons intended for the sea extension of the city of Monaco. The work designed by Bouygues TP was built to order in Poland by the Gdansk Shipyards, it allows the construction of no less than seven different caissons. Nearly 250 people will be working on site every day.

As for the foundation of the future Monegasque eco district, prior to the installation of the caissons, there has been related work at the port of Marseille. Jean Lefebvre Company will provide 1.6 million tonnes of washed limestone from its Châteauneuf-les-Martigues quarry. About thirty ships will therefore make the trip between Fos and Monaco for the supply of materials.
