Casualties – 35m yacht KOI sank after fire – 09.09.2017

According to reports from the Hellenic Coast Guard (Greek – Λιμενικό Σώμα-Ελληνική Ακτοφυλακή ) the 35 metre luxury explorer yacht KOI required assistance on Saturday 9th September early in the morning after reporting fire on board in Greek waters between Kefalonia and Zakynthos islands, Ionian sea.

Seven crew members were rescued using liferafts and boats by the crew of the fishing vessel AFRODITI and were to transferred to the nearby Agios Nikolaos port, northern Zakynthos.

KOI sank with no leaks have been reported of which the area was being monitored for possible pollution.


KOI was built in New Zealand by McMullen & Wing at Auckland in 2001. She was named as SURPRISE and sold in January 2009 of which she was renamed KOI with homeport as Avatiu, Cook Islands flag. IMO: 8663066, 35 m; 270 GRT. Compliment – 7 crew with 9 guests.
