One week on, the fire that has raged on the YANTIAN EXPRESS has finally been brought under control. The ship’s owner, Hapag-Lloyd, said that salvors are now towing the burnt ship to Halifax in Canada. Three tugs are being deployed to get the ship moved to its destination some 800 nautical miles away.
Hapag-Lloyd has warned clients that all cargo in bay 12 on deck and forward has been hit by the fire, as well as all cargo in hold one, stretching from bay one to nine. Moreover, all cargo in hold two containing bays 11 to 17 has been affected by fire, smoke and / or damage caused by firefighting water. Damage caused by smoke, heat and / or firefighting water in adjacent areas is possible, the German carrier warned. She has 7,500 TEU capacity.
On top of that, all reefers in bay one to 24 are without power and switched off.
“Let us assure you that we are working hard on getting more detailed information on your cargo and will share this with you as soon as possible,” Hapag-Lloyd told clients in a release.
